Register A Business Name with CAC: A Step-by-Step Guide

Do you want to formalize your venture? This is one of the most exciting milestones for any Nigerian entrepreneur. Registering your business name with the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) legally protects your brand, grants you access to corporate banking, builds client trust, and promotes full regulatory compliance.

Recent upgrades to the CAC’s Company Registration Portal (CRP) means the entire application process is fully digital. You no longer need to stand in line at government offices to get your venture legalized.

Let's dive into the step-by-step walk through to successfully register a business name with CAC online.

Pre-Registration Requirements

Before logging onto the portal, gather the essential documents to ensure a smooth application process:

  • Proposed Business Names: Prepare 2 to 3 distinct options in order of preference (e.g., ‘Damina’s Artisanal Bakery’ instead of a generic title like ‘Damina’s Bakery’).

  • Valid Government Identification: Clear color scan of your National Identity Number (NIN) slip, International Passport, Driver’s License, or Voter's Card.

  • Passport Photograph: A clear, recent digital passport photo taken against a plain background.

  • Digital Signature: A clean scan of your official signature written in dark ink on a plain white sheet of paper.

  • Business Details: Your physical business address, email, phone number, and a precise description of your business activities.

Conduct a Public Name Search & Reserve Your Name

Every registration begins with confirming that your preferred name is unique and available for registration:

  • Visit the official CAC Public Search portal (pre.cac.gov.ng) to conduct a free search. Now, inputting the name brings instant results, showcasing whether it's free or taken. 

  • If no existing enterprise uses your chosen name or something confusingly similar, log in (or create an account as a "Public User").

  • Navigate to ‘Name Reservation’ and fill in your preferred name options, and pay the statutory reservation fee through the integrated portal payment channel.

  • Once submitted, the CAC registrar reviews your application. Upon approval, your name is reserved for 60 days, giving you time to complete the registration process.

Fill Out the Online Registration Details

With your approved availability code in hand, select ‘New Registration’ on the dashboard:

  • Select Structure: Choose Business Name (Sole Proprietorship or Partnership).

  • Particulars of Business: Input your physical office location (must be a verifiable Nigerian address) and specify your principal business activities.

  • Proprietor Information: Input your legal details, occupation, full address, and identity card details exactly as they appear on your government-issued ID.

Upload Scanned Supporting Documents

The CAC system automated verification process checks uploads for legibility. Ensure your files meet quality standards:

  • Upload high-resolution, color PDF or JPEG files of your ID card, passport photograph, and signature.

  • Double-check that all names spelled on the portal match the names on your uploaded identification.

Pay the Official Registration Fees

Review your application for typos before proceeding to payment.

  • Pay the prescribed business name registration filing fee using the Remita payment gateway.

  • Use direct debit card options for immediate payment confirmation on your dashboard.

Processing and Certificate Download

After payment, your application shifts to ‘Submitted’ status for CAC review. Approval typically takes 1 to 7 working days. Once approved, CAC will notify you via email or your portal dashboard. You can then directly download:

  • Your official Digital CAC Certificate of Registration.

  • The Status Report (Form CAC-BN01) containing your registered business details.

  • Your automatically assigned Tax Identification Number (TIN) is often integrated right onto your documents.

While the CAC Portal is designed for public access, completing the registration process yourself can sometimes take a challenging dimension. A single spelling error, wrong dating, choosing a restricted business object, or uploading a slightly blurry signature image can trigger a ‘Query’ on your portal.
