Starting a School in Nigeria: A Practical Guide

Starting a School in Nigeria: The Requirements

Understand the Structure 

Until recent times, the Corporate Affairs Commission (CAC) allowed owners to register their schools as business names. That has changed. Now, schools must be a body corporate or a limited liability company with directors and shareholders. This gives them the authority to issue certificates in their registered name. 

The Qualifications 

A school registration is much like any other company registration that needs a director and shareholder. However, one of the directors of the school must hold a valid Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN) certificate. It is a mandatory requirement for school registration. 

The School Registration Proper 

Follow this process to register your school on the CAC platform:

  • Obtain necessary information about the school and key officials. Get the personal information of each director and shareholder, such as full names, signatures, shareholding percentage, numbers, email addresses, and valid IDs. 

  • If you have an account, login to reserve the school name. CAC gives you the chance to use a preferred name and 2 alternative names as fallback options. 

  • You can draw up your incorporation documents, such as the Memorandum and Articles or Association (MEMART) or adopt the genetic one for schools offered on the portal. With all the requirements and forms you have collected, submit the documents and pay the statutory fees.

How Much does It Cost to Start a School in Nigeria? 

From name reservation to statutory fees, and everything else in between, doing the registration yourself may take over ₦50,000. However, with the intricacies involved, you can elect for professional help to cover the entire process. This could take fees extending to over ₦100,000.

Approved Application and Final Actions 

When the registration goes through, your school will be issued a Certificate of Incorporation. However, your work is far from over. 

You need to obtain approval from the Ministry of Education of the state where your school is based. Meeting their requirements would mean your school has met the regulatory standards and avoided possible breaches. 

Other documents you may need include: 

  • Fire Safety Certification 

  • SCUML (Special Control Unit Against Money Laundering) Certificate. This shows your school is not a front to launder money. 

Final Thoughts
